Are you looking for an SEO tool like SEMrush?

In this Serpstat review and detailed analysis of this SEO software, I’ll show you how it compares to the SEMrush (my top choice for SEO analysis and research)

What is Serpstat?

Serpstat is another SEO tool that has similar features to SEMrush. As a disclosure, I got SERPstat when it had a lifetime deal on Appsumo (now sold out).

But upon using this tool for quite some time, you’ll find that it’s kinda mimicking what’s available on SEMrush with a lot less feature.

So rather than just sharing what you can find in the Serpstat tool, I’ll compare it side by side with my SEMrush subscription.

The difference with the monthly payment plan for SEMrush is around $20+, so the question that I initially asked myself was, it is ok to save $20+ for a tool like Serpstat and replace my SEMrush subscription?

Or is it much better to pay the extra $20+ to get SEMrush and the features it has that Serpstat is missing?

I tested these features…

With SEO tools like SERPstat, there’s a bazillion features available. But most of these features are just “bells and whistles” and aren’t as important as the ones that I’ll be sharing here.

So the features that I’d list here are what I normally use and why. If you think I’d miss something important, let me know here.

Product Dashboard for a quick feel of SEO

Pretty basic, as the only thing useful for me is the SEO/PPC keywords which shows in green
While I can see visibility and SE traffic, the most useful set of keywords is the “organic keywords” section which shows new, lost, improved and declined keywords.

Compare that with the project dashboard and domain overview of SEMrush. SEMrush definitely has more useful information.


You can see more useful data, like what date and time range are we looking at, Top 3, Top 10, Top 20, Ranking Distributions, what keywords had + and – impacts.

Organic Search or Keywords Reports

The next section is where I usually find the keywords that I’m ranking for and that are relevant for my online business (I can do this for my competitor’s websites as well).

Here’s the Organic Search report for this site:, it says that I have about 2.1K positions in the US search engine (labeled 2)

Now let’s compare that with the Organic keywords reports from SEMrush:

You’ll immediately notice that the SEMrush dashboard has much more comprehensive keyword data and reports. The amount of keyword positions on SEMrush is almost half of what we saw on Serpstat.

Upon digging deeper, it seems that Serpstat is still measuring very old keywords on my site like “Traffic Travis vs market samurai”.

But in SEMrush, there’s a date on when the last rankings were checked (labeled 4).

This is very helpful because you’ll want to know if this are your current SEO rankings.

My conclusion is that the information presented on Serpstat is NOT as comprehensive as the SEMrush version.

One thing that you might have also noticed is the SERP features which tells me if it’s a SCHEMA ranking, a video, image or something else that ranked.

Cost per Click data on keywords

CPC information is useful because it can help you identify “money keywords”.

Money keywords are profitable keywords and are usually indicated by a higher CPC, which means that people are willing to bid higher to get exposure to these terms.

In the screenshot below, you’ll see that Serpstat has some pretty low CPC compared with what SEMrush is finding.

Now let’s compare this data with what I’ve sorted out from my SEMrush account.

You’ll see that SEMrush has very high CPC numbers which can mean that advertisers may or may have not bid that.

What’s interesting in this screenshot is that the keywords in the SEMrush dashboard are what I’m currently targeting.

While the Serpstat results have keywords coming from all sorts of LSI keywords.

Competitor’s Report

This data and report is very important to knowing your current SEO status and rankings.

But Serpstat is showing me a different list of domains that they find to be relevant to my site than when compared to competitors in SEMrush.

SEMrush is different as it can also provide more information including the costs of the competitor’s domain as well as data on “Paid keywords”.

What I didn’t like about Serpstat

As I’ve shown you in the comparison features above, Serpstat can do some of the stuff that SEMrush does, but on a lesser, simpler scale.

This might be ok, if you’re just starting out with SEO and can’t spend the extra $29/month for SEMrush.

If that’s the case, I would recommend that you use FREE SEO tools first like Google Keyword Planner, but if you really like to become a PRO in Search Engine Optimization, I highly recommend you invest on the tool that Professional like me use: SEMrush

Serpstat Chrome Extension

SERPstat has a Chrome extension that is an add-on for subscribers. It’s a great way to quickly check the on-page SEO and keyword rankings of a page that you are visiting (very useful for competitor research).

Pricing and Subscription Plans

The current pricing plan for Serpstat starts at $69/month up to $499/month.

Alternatives and Comparison

The only reason I have Serpstat is because I’ve purchased the Lifetime option via Appsumo. But I’d personally prefer the other SEO tools, mainly SEMrush because it has more data, more features for a little bit more investment monthly.

Serpstat vs SEMrush

Serpstat seems to have mirrored some of the best features of SEMrush, but if you’re a PRO SEMrush user, you’ll notice that it lacks intuitiveness that you’ve been accustomed if you’ve used tools like SEMrush.

Serpstat vs Ahrefs

Ahrefs is more like a direct competitor with SEMrush and not Serpstat.

Serpstat vs Moz

Serpstat is more like SEMrush, and Moz is more popular in Agency and enterprise demographic because it has been the software company launched by Rand Fishkin.

I still use their MOZ DA and page metrics to analyzing SEO Competition.

The data i’m getting from MOZ is similar to SEMrush, so I’m more confident that SEMrush and MOZ have more accurate data and SERPSTAT is over estimating my stats.

Conclusion and Summary

My conclusion is to use SEMrush if you can afford the additional $29/month. It contains more features, and you’ll love working and using this tool to improve your SEO campaigns.
